ALBUM + PACKAGING DESIGN
PROJECT BRIEF
Cliff Beach approached me to design his latest album You Showed Me The Way.

Deliverables
-
1 album cover design
-
1 package design
-
1 CD design
Photos by Sheldon Botler were provided at the beginning of the project. It was expressed to me that the collection of recordings were an homage to musicians and songwriters that inspired Cliff beach. I gave the same type of treatment with the visuals: homage to the visual artists in the black community. Works by Idris Habib, Aaron Douglas, Bisa Butler, Aaron Rickets, Stacie Monday, Lauren Mckenzie Noel, & Kehinde Wiley were presented to the client.

From these works there were certain aesthetics that were evident and the were emulated.
-
hypercolor/fauvist/expressionist color schemes
-
Rhythmic textured background against sometimes minimalistically painted subjects
-
2d flat designs in contrast with fully formed figures
-
Ornamental textures

Keeping with the "homage" theme the flowers were chosen by their meaning of gratefulness and gratitude: Carnations, Lilies and Forget Me Nots. The font is retro maintaining style and elegance as the picture that were delivered express.

In addition to organic brush stroke textures digital artifacts were also introduce to give another layer of texture and grit. These are digital smears of glowing white that come off of the subject adding another layer of depth to composition.

Once the package design was completed some elements were needed to be adjusted in order for the cover design's composition to be balanced correctly.
CD DESIGN
3 Treatments were created for the CD design.
-
Kept the same colors as the album design, but for my taste I thought it would be more of a treat and suprise to have the CD inside maintain it's own pop (in design or color).
-
In respect to giving the CD its "pop", the second design was a mostly white design to represent his suit.
-
The one that was chosen to move into production was the opposite treatment to the album. The main colors were switched with one another.

Below are both the file delivered for printing as well as the design with the CD bounds applied.
